The main challenge lies in the stable modelling of the air ducts in the core. The Thermoshock process achieves this by using a very high viscosity furfuryl-alcohol modified urea resin. In order to meet the somewhat mutually exclusive requirements of the process (high flowability on the one hand, high viscosity on the other), various additives are mixed with the moulding sand. Cores are cured lying on core shells in continuous furnaces.
