Expansion of 3D Printing Capabilities at the HA Center of Competence

With the successful installation of another 3D printer at the HA Center of Competence, we have laid the groundwork for higher print speeds, larger components, and more cost-effective additive manufacturing. Since September 2024, we have been working with Zimmer Austria to develop a new binder system specifically tailored to the requirements of large-format 3D printing applications.

The new technology opens up a wide range of possibilities for use in the foundry industry. The key benefits at a glance:

  • Higher layer heights: Up to 2 mm instead of the previously standard 0.3 mm.
  • Greater printing performance: Printing speeds up to six times faster than with established systems.
  • Large-format applications: Use of large-format print heads up to 5,500 mm in length and weighing up to 7 metric tons.
  • Sustainable use of materials: Recycled sand can be used for printing.
  • Low-maintenance print modules: Repairs are possible down to the individual nozzle level.
  • Significantly lower costs: The print modules cost about 10% of the price of comparable piezo modules.
  • Robust industrial technology: The durable machine design is engineered to withstand the demanding conditions in foundries.

We would like to thank all our colleagues from the Center of Competence and the Applications Team, as well as our partner Zimmer Austria, for their successful collaboration on the development and commissioning of this project.
Together, we are taking 3D printing to a new level and opening up new possibilities for the foundry industry.
