Truck engine blocks: Preventing finning defects

The crankcases in large goods vehicles (LGVs) are still made of cast iron. In fact, they are usually the single heaviest cast component in such a truck. Engine blocks need to be able to withstand complex loads over a service life of many years and for several hundred thousand kilometres.

When it comes to casting LGV engine blocks, Gusswerke Saarbrücken GmbH relies on a core package process, in which a a Cold-Box hybrid system from HA and a Veinseal additive play a major role.

The challenges

The casting process for truck engine blocks involves a highly complex core package and high thermal stress. At the same time, the foundry needs to be able to guarantee high levels of productivity.

The solution

A Cold-Box hybrid solution using aliphatic and silicate Cold-Box binders combines the benefits of both systems:

  • Low gas
  • Low adhesive tendency
  • Low emissions
  • Modified for the use of reclaimed sand
  • Cost reductions: the use of Veinseal 61 eliminates the need for special sand
  • Minimises expansion defects
  • Minimises finning defects
