Bentonites | Lustrous carbon formers

High-quality moulding sand additives for clay-bonded moulding materials

The production of bentonites and lustrous carbon formers as well as the distribution of finished products is handled by our subsidiary HA Minerals GmbH – a joint venture between RST Rhein-See Transport GmbH and Hüttenes-Albertus Chemische Werke GmbH.

This enables the HA Group to offer all moulding sand binder systems for all applications and to supply foundries with optimally matched products, from core binder systems and additives to bentonites and lustrous carbon former systems. For our customers, the benefits are tangible: research and development, combined with the technical application of state-of-the-art products, from a single source.

Developing optimal moulding additives, together

Everything you need – from a single source

As a member of the global HA group of companies, HA Minerals produces and sells bentonites and lustrous carbon formers for foundries (iron, steel and non-ferrous metal).

Our portfolio contains pure bentonites for every application, as well as mixtures of bentonite and lustrous carbon formers with individual compositions.

Progress through innovation

Delivering increases in economic and ecological efficiency is only possible with a continuous search for new and innovative raw materials and formulations. Our laboratories and pilot plant work hand in hand to guarantee the highest quality and further refine our products. Our customers can also benefit from our laboratory as a service provider.

Bentonite

The NAMORIT product group combines a wide range of natural semi-sodium bentonites and natural calcium bentonites. The foundry properties of these bentonites have been optimised via sodium carbonate activation.

  • high source volume
  • high strength
  • extremely good temperature resistance

NAMORIT Group products are used as binders for clay-bonded moulding materials in foundries. The extensive product range offers a suitable material for almost every application. Due to their extremely good temperature resistance, in many cases the quantities added to the circulating sand can be reduced in comparison to conventional activated calcium bentonites.

Bentonites from the NAMORIT product range can also be deployed in steel foundries.

Lustrous Carbon Formers

In clay-bonded moulding material systems, lustrous carbon formers are added to the moulding material to improve the surface quality of castings, to prevent casting defects and to promote disintegration.

  • high-quality coal dust
  • extremely low sulphur and nitrogen content
  • excellent yield of lustrous carbon from the gas phase

The use of polymerised hydrocarbon compounds in our lustrous carbon formers results in a balanced ratio of volatile components and coking residues to avoid moulding material-melt reactions.

HA Minerals is the only producer of lustrous carbon formers to manufacture its own precursors for the product family of high-quality lustrous carbon formers. We use specially controlled hydrocarbon compounds, which not only guarantee a high yield of lustrous carbon but also release only the smallest amounts of environmentally harmful cracking and pyrolysis products.

We supply a comprehensive range of lustrous carbon formers with different properties and different lustrous carbon contents – both in powder and in liquid form.

Bentonite-lustrous carbon former mixtures

Today, mixtures of bentonite and lustrous carbon formers are considered state-of-the-art in the production of castings with clay-bound moulding materials. Whether for reasons of safety (explosive nature of coal dusts) or for cost reasons (dosing systems, storage systems), the use of bentonite-lustrous carbon former mixtures has established itself in practice.

With the POLYCOL product family, Hüttenes-Albertus Minerals combines the specific properties of bentonites and lustrous carbon formers to produce a product that is specially tailored to you and the needs of your foundry.

There are no restrictions regarding the combination of different bentonites with different lustrous carbon formers. The incorporation of additives such as swelling binders, soda, etc. is also possible without any problems.
